NMTL received donation of Wenhui magazines
2015.8.21

Mr. Chao Philex, Chairperson of the North America Chinese Writers Association, donated a full set of Wenhui magazines (《文薈》) to the NMTL on August 21, and Yu Susan, Director of Taipei Cultural Center, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, on behalf of the NMTL, received the donation. Senior writers Wang Tingchun, Chao Susie, Chao Shumin, Shi Shuqing, Chou Edmund, and Wang Della, the wife of the late Hsia Chihtsing have arrived Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and made their emotional speeches. On the occasion, a coterie of literary friends has attended the warm ceremony.

Wenhui magazine was an official periodical of the North American Chinese Writers Association. The Association, founded in 1990, has 26 chapters and about 2,000 members in the area of the United States and Canada. The members include literary precursors, such as Qi Jun, Hsia Chihtsing, Wang Tingchun, Zheng Chouyu, Chao Susie, and Chao Shumin, among others. Wenhui, a bimonthly literary magazine, which Ms. Shi Yunian, Secretary-General of the North American Chinese Writers Association, founded single-handedly in 2003, was one of high-level publications in pure literature. Many well-known writers, including Hsia Chihtsing, Wang Tingchun, Ma Jacob, Liu Yong, Chao Susie, Chao Shumin, Tsung Su, Zhang Chunying, Chou Fennah, as well as members of Chinese Writers Association of New York, literary friends in the communities, and so on, had left their thought-provoking works in this bimonthly magazine.

Changing from black-and-white printing to color printing, Wenhui bimonthly witnessed the writing changes of the North American Chinese writers along the changes of times. The publication of Wenhui lasted for six years and had 33 issues, from 2003 to September 2009. It is worth mentioning that Chairperson Chao Philex also donated, in the donation ceremony, his correspondence with Mr. Hsia Chihtsing and Ms. Qi Jun discussing about Wenhui, which is a precious historical material of overseas Chinese literature.

Over the years, Ms. Shi Yunian, the founder of Wenhui, had dedicated herself to the promotion of Chinese literature in overseas Chinese community, while carrying out the Association’s affairs. She founded literary workshops “Wenhui Classes” in 2006 and offered the classes of fiction, prose, poetry, calligraphy, painting, and so on, having boosted the Chinese community’s literary atmosphere. After Ms. Shi passed away in September 2014, the North American Chinese Writers Association donated a complete collection of Wenhui bimonthly to the NMTL for a permanent collection, to commemorate and cherish her contributions to the promotion of overseas Chinese literature. Chen Yiyuan, Director of the NMTL, on behalf of the NMTL, has expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Director Yu Susan’s facilitation and Chairperson Chao Philex’s act of great generosity.
